Quilling by Sandra White has moved!

After a long vacation from my blog, yeah like five and half years, I have restarted my blog. It is now located here on my website.
...and if you haven't seen me since 2014, you will see lots of new designs.

In 2013, Folk Art Pieces were added to my designs, which you saw on this blog. Lots of color and whimsy.

In 2016, I added Gardens, a tribute to my Mom. She had beautiful gardens that she loved to play in. I can't grow anything, so I created beautiful Quilled gardens, no water or sunlight needed. I know my Mom has beautiful gardens in heaven, and that my brother and Dad are there helping her out. Or at least smiling...

WindowBox Gardens and Skylight Gardens were my new series in 2017, all made with lots of original Quilled flowers.

My Quilled Landscapes debuted at the League of New Hampshire Craftmen's Fair in 2018, and they were loved by everyone, well almost everyone. Big beautiful landscapes with lots of Quilling, the entire piece is Quilled! That means lots of little rolls of paper strategically placed to create the landscape picture. This was my first one, a 16x20 framed piece:

Birches at Sunset 2018

This year I have been designing a small butterfly, moth and dragonfly series, small floral garden series, and am working on a new design for Quilled birth announcement keepsakes. Just a few of my ideas. And as always, I want to do that one giant piece...I'll get there.

I am now down to one show a year: The Craftmens Fair, which is 9 days long and located at Newbury New Hampshire at the Sunapee Resort -- its a ski area and we set up at the bottom of the mountain in large tents, so we are good rain or shine. Lots of great work and demonstrations, at least two days worth of looking.

This show is the one that I love and will continue participating in forever...however long that is! The craftspeople are friendly and with this being my 34th year, we all know each other. You might want to visit if you're in New England, its worth the trip. Here's the link to the League's website. It starts the first Saturday in August and runs through the following weekend, 9 days.

So I hope you have enjoyed this little recap, and I would love for you to come over to my new blog and follow my Quilling journey.

My new blog is my Quilling journey, with 45 years of show experiences and many stories.

I have included stories about my grandchildren intertwined with my Quilling. Its all fun!

I also show new designs on my blog,

Just to recap: I started with the Quilled Wedding Invitation Keepsakes in 1975, when I created one for my girl friend as a wedding gift.

I then designed lots of Wildlife Pieces with my original quilling technique with a cut out over the quilling, using the cutout for the design and the quilling for the details, like the feathers on the loon. This work was my key to being juryed with the League of NH Craftsmen in 1987. That was my dream fulfilled. But check out my new blog for the story, you will enjoy it.

Inspiration is Everything

Sometimes you look around and see something that touches your heart. The Great Blue Herons that we see daily from ice out to ice in on the Merrymeeting River in Alton, New Hampshire, are the creatures that have touched my heart. And once you are touched by something from nature, it opens your eyes to everything else that nature provides.

This is my first Blue Heron design. Just elegant and beautiful.

My second design was the Blue Heron Turned. He is looking over his shoulder at me. I wonder what he is really thinking. Am I in HIS space....

And then I decided that the Great Blue Heron needed to fly. It takes him some major efforts to get out of the water........and I have heard that when he flies up behind you while you are in a  kayak you will remember him. Maybe not kindly, as he truly is bigger than life.

The fourth heron design for me is the Heron Fishing. He was first designed for a large piece standing on the edge of the river with trees and mountains. He then moved to his own piece and here he is.

This year I designed the fifth one...................He is standing and dreaming.........Heron on Watch..

My new one for next year has already been designed. Its my Herons Together.

I wonder what the next heron will be doing..........maybe his head will be in the water!

WindowBoxes

This is one of my newest designs. I initially called them 'quillages', a cross between quilling and collages. Then a Friend saw them at my last show in Wells, Maine, and said "I love your windowboxes"...... and so the name changes to remind us of past images.

These pieces are all one-of-a-kind with a quilled flower, many rolled paper beads which I made myself, interesting threads, and handmade or fancy papers that I have gathered over the years. Some even include hand-cut pieces and sometimes glass beads. I cut multiple openings in the mat and fill the spaces and add elements until I am Happy. I also add two or three mats to give depth to the piece. I then custom frame under glass, usually in a wood painted frame. Red is my favorite color, so you will see the red WindowBox here.

I enjoy these WindowBoxes because it gives me the freedom to create a new piece every time and they are all wonderful pieces of me. I try to name them based on the feelings they create when they are admired. Let me surprise you with a WindowBox of your very own...........just give me a color and let me do it my way.

I have more of these WindowBoxes on my website in a variety of colors.....and more coming everyday. I am thinking about smaller pieces.

Take Time for the Little Things........

The Accident

Yes, the accident.....
In the mid 80's............that sounds so long ago...........my mother-in-law Dona was making cut and pierced lampshades to sell in the League of NH Craftsmen shops with my father-in-law Dick's turned wooden lamps............very beautiful, I even have a couple.

We had thought that perhaps a little quilling on the shades might be pretty. So I made up some flowers and we tried to place them on the shade. We had envisioned that the flowers would show nicely when the lamp was turned on. But it did not. Instead, the flowers slipped behind a cut-out in the shade, and it happened to be that of a loon.

And the accident was born. Quilling my way. When the lamp was turned on, all you could see was a blob of something. But when it was off, the quilling showed very well behind the opening. That's where the idea of quilling behind a cut-out was born. A Happy Accident. So much for quilled lampshades..............

I did make flowers for a few lampshades with Dona completing them. And I did sell a couple................but my real interest was in the birds and ducks.........and on to wildflowers and other wildlife.

Quilling, My Way, developed from that little accident.............. I do have a lampshade with quilled flowers on it as shown below. I am unable, perhaps unwilling is a little more honest, to make any more, as I do not have any interest in making the shade itself. Too tedious...............like quilling isn't tedious.
