Quilling by Sandra White has moved!

After a long vacation from my blog, yeah like five and half years, I have restarted my blog. It is now located here on my website.
...and if you haven't seen me since 2014, you will see lots of new designs.

In 2013, Folk Art Pieces were added to my designs, which you saw on this blog. Lots of color and whimsy.

In 2016, I added Gardens, a tribute to my Mom. She had beautiful gardens that she loved to play in. I can't grow anything, so I created beautiful Quilled gardens, no water or sunlight needed. I know my Mom has beautiful gardens in heaven, and that my brother and Dad are there helping her out. Or at least smiling...

WindowBox Gardens and Skylight Gardens were my new series in 2017, all made with lots of original Quilled flowers.

My Quilled Landscapes debuted at the League of New Hampshire Craftmen's Fair in 2018, and they were loved by everyone, well almost everyone. Big beautiful landscapes with lots of Quilling, the entire piece is Quilled! That means lots of little rolls of paper strategically placed to create the landscape picture. This was my first one, a 16x20 framed piece:

Birches at Sunset 2018

This year I have been designing a small butterfly, moth and dragonfly series, small floral garden series, and am working on a new design for Quilled birth announcement keepsakes. Just a few of my ideas. And as always, I want to do that one giant piece...I'll get there.

I am now down to one show a year: The Craftmens Fair, which is 9 days long and located at Newbury New Hampshire at the Sunapee Resort -- its a ski area and we set up at the bottom of the mountain in large tents, so we are good rain or shine. Lots of great work and demonstrations, at least two days worth of looking.

This show is the one that I love and will continue participating in forever...however long that is! The craftspeople are friendly and with this being my 34th year, we all know each other. You might want to visit if you're in New England, its worth the trip. Here's the link to the League's website. It starts the first Saturday in August and runs through the following weekend, 9 days.

So I hope you have enjoyed this little recap, and I would love for you to come over to my new blog and follow my Quilling journey.

My new blog is my Quilling journey, with 45 years of show experiences and many stories.

I have included stories about my grandchildren intertwined with my Quilling. Its all fun!

I also show new designs on my blog,

Just to recap: I started with the Quilled Wedding Invitation Keepsakes in 1975, when I created one for my girl friend as a wedding gift.

I then designed lots of Wildlife Pieces with my original quilling technique with a cut out over the quilling, using the cutout for the design and the quilling for the details, like the feathers on the loon. This work was my key to being juryed with the League of NH Craftsmen in 1987. That was my dream fulfilled. But check out my new blog for the story, you will enjoy it.

Lots of PR recently

I just received my copy of the Russian magazine "Scrapbooking: Creative Lifestyle". I was so thrilled to see my Heron Turned published in the magazine, even though it is all Russian and I am unable to translate anything........except the quillingbysandrawhite.com. So I guess that is a good thing! I have a link to the magazine, but there is very little on the website, not even my quilled picture. But that's ok, the magazine does seem to be attracting people to this blog and my website. I was impressed by the quilling in the magazine, just wonder what it says.

My Rooster seems to be making lots of good impressions. I am so glad that the folk art pieces are making everybody happy. I know that I enjoy making them.
Here is my recent bird.

My Quilled Rooster has also been added to a couple of blogs. Check them out.

Creative Artworks Blog by Linda Lewis.

And her blog article was picked up by another blog:

Its really great to see my work on other people's blogs. Enjoy.

I just realized that it has been 6 months since I have been here. Wow, the last post was just before the League of NH Craftsmans Fair last August. For a quick update, the fair was great, AND my folk art pieces were well received and many were adopted. Which keeps me moving ahead with more designs. I will be back with my new ones to show you.

League of New Hampshire Craftsman's Fair

It's that time again...the annual League of New Hampshire Craftsman's Fair is coming up on August 3rd thru 11th in Newbury, New Hampshire. I have been showing there since 1987 and its a great opportunity for craftsmen and collectors alike. We all bring our best work, all 300 plus of us. Please order nice weather, we would really appreciate it.

For those of you who wonder what it takes to do a 9 day show that brings at least 30,000 visitors, here is the view from my side of the road.

I have spent that last 6 months getting my work quilled and creating my new designs. The last month I have spent framing everything and giving a few finishing touches to my favorite pieces. The frames and supplies had to be ordered a month or two ago so that everything is ready to go.

The last two weeks I have spent putting stamps and mailing labels on my new postcards, which were ordered two months ago to be here. I order from nextdayflyers.com. They have great service and a really nice product line.

My next two weeks I will spend getting out the booth and everything that goes with it, from the carpets to the lights to the fabric. Everything needs to be perfect for the Fair. And some things may need to be replaced, which is easier now than set up day.

The last week I try to be sure everything is done so that I can simply think the week through and set up on Thursday and Friday. And yes, if you give me an hour to set up, I can set up in an hour. If you give me a day, I can set up in a day. But give me two days, and I will use both of them. But, lets be fair, the booth is going to be there for 9 days (plus two days setting up) and I will be 'living' there. Anyways, that my view. And here I sit, taking a sit down break and sharing my pre-Sunapee life.

I was hoping to put a really nice picture of last year's booth here, but unfortunately, we had a lightning storm two weeks ago, and it cooked my computer, modem, and wireless router (one more thing to do, order a new computer). And all my pictures. Here is a picture of my booth in Wells, Maine, at Laudholm Farm last year instead. It doesn't show the Sunapee booth, which is much more elaborate, little curtains top and bottom, and carpeting, but its a nice booth anyways, only a two day show.

I hope you enjoyed the little view from my side of the road...a Fair. Maybe you will have an opportunity to check out the show. Plan to spend the day, or two and have a great time.

Take Time to Enjoy the Little Things.

My New Folk Art Quilling Designs

I have moved into a new era...my newest designs are Folk Art Designs, very colorful and typically very simple designs with lots of quilling.

I have made many birds, ducks, and flowers. And my favorites, of course, are the Loons, the Blue Herons, and the Sunflowers, which can all be seen on my website. I will continue to make those many designs and the favorites will become my signature collection.

Here is the first in my series 'A Collection of Folk Art', quilling my way. It is my Quilled Folk Art Rooster. I have been thinking about this series for a long time, loving color that nature does not always allow.  I read a blog post from Luann Udell which was on FineArtViews in which she talked with a person who had all this art she needed to sell before trying a new line. And Luann told her to pack it away and do what makes you happy (my short version)....I read that again, and again......and said, she is absolutely right. I will not be packing up my work, I will be adding to it. A new line.......WOW. Sometimes you just need to be given permission, Luann is right.

It has been a long winter, my mom has moved into a nursing home, well we had to move her.....and it is sad. So I need something to be glad about, and Luann's article hit me at the right time. Thank you Luann... I will personally thank you again this summer at the League of NH Craftsman's Fair.

So my new line has color, lots of color, and is happy.........and it makes me feel good. And excited about my work...again.  Check it out. I will be back soon with number two.

By the way, I may keep this one as a sample, as it has special meaning......I have moved on....

I would love it if you all could check out my facebook page and like the new rooster.......well, that is if you like it. I am almost to 300 views, so even checking it out would be great. I made the 300 views!!

Take Time to Enjoy the Little Things.

Do what you love and you will never work a day in your Life.

Featured Zibbeter

Happy New Year.............as I sit here thinking about my plans for 2013, I realize that I have been quilling since 1973 and showing at juried craft fairs since 1975. Seems like a long time, but when you are doing something you love, time passes quickly.

This past year, I had a few nice mentions on different sites and here is the most recent.
Judy did a wonderful job with this interview on Zibbet.

Then check out my shop on Zibbet.  and all the other shops. Really nice place...and wonderful community.

Check it out. She really has a lot of great questions. What I find really interesting is reading other interviews, as it makes me feel not alone in my world of art.

Here is my double heron. This year I plan on making more 'doubles.' I want to get the female ducks and birds in with the males, as they are so differently colored. So I wonder what will be my second one. I am thinking maybe cardinals.

And here is why Christmas was so wonderful this year....meet Lyndi, almost 4 and Jonah 7 months old.
Our grandchildren enjoying life.........

Happy New Year and

Take Time to Enjoy the Little Things

Have a wonderful holiday season, and
Take Time to Enjoy the Little Things.

I am definitely taking a breather. All the orders are on their way to their new homes and I am settling in for the snow coming on Sunday. Will be sweet. I love the snow, it causes us to take a breath and hibernate. It is very calming. We will be enjoying our two grandchildren, Lyndi will be four in January and Jonah is 7 months old, so Christmas is truly a time of wonder.
We will visit my mom in the nursing home, she has been there almost two months and still thinks she is coming home...a tough decision, but the best one for her.

Anyways, I spent a couple of weeks working on my new facebook page.
It has definitely been a challenge. I have not used facebook before because I really have no interest in sharing what I am doing now. But my son has convinced me that it will get my website out there and my quilling. So I am off to follow the trail.....so I am supposed to asked you to 'like me on facebook,' right?

Anyways, this is a time for Good Cheer, and Happy Holidays to you and your family. Thanks to everyone for their support over the past thirty-eight, yes, 38 years of quilling.

A little something to enjoy...

Lyndi and Jonah

Nanny and Lyndi  (my Mom)

And Truly, Take Time to Enjoy the Little Things.

A big thanks to Helen Hiebert for including my work in her quilling post. Check it out when you get a minute.

Quillers to Join Me on EBSQ Art Site?

Greetings. and Welcome to Spring.

I have just joined ESBQ Art. It is a website where you show your work in your portfolio and then link to a shop or website you have somewhere so people can buy from you. It is an on-line gallery and I have found it very easy to work. This is my link to my portfolio. Here is a quote from their site:

"EBSQ is a creative community of artists, artisans, and photographers. We provide the tools. Just add art! Here at EBSQ, you'll find easy-to-use tools to help you take control of your art career. Artist members receive a professional portfolio space with unlimited uploads, use of our innovative digital certificate of authenticity program, access to multiple monthly exhibits, and a first-rate community of peers in our online art forum. Artists can easily connect to their favorite social networks and online sales venues. Get inspired daily with our Art of the Day newsletter. Take your skills further -- or in a new direction all together -- with our extensive library of tips and tutorials on everything from marketing to new techniques. Join us today and see why EBSQ has been the premier community for self-representing artists since 2000."

I have signed up for the $89 per year membership and I believe it is going to be great for me. I have been looking for an "art site" for awhile, as my work is priced above most craft and is more fine craft and art than I find most sites offer. What I am wondering is if any of you quillers out there might be interested. Right now I am in the wildlife and animal art gallery, which is ok. But I would love to have a quilling gallery on the site. In order for them to consider a new category there must be three quillers with a significant body of work. Anybody out there? Please sign up if you are interested and maybe we can get a quilling gallery going.

Here are a few of my recent custom orders. The first is a Business Card which I did something fancy cutting with and added to the mat on my Monarch Butterfly. I made two of these as gifts for a new business grand opening. Really cool idea.

These three custom keepsake wedding invitations were entirely different from what I usually see. And that is great because it means I get to be creative. And that is what it's all about.

Well, that's it for today. The sun is out and I keep trying to work outside. But the wind is blowing and its cold. Just looks like spring. Supposed to be in the 60's this week.

So check out the website:  EBSQ Art.  Even if you aren't interested in joining, it is a wonderful site to check out some really beautiful work from artists, craftspeople, and photographers. Great site.

Take Time to Enjoy the Little Things.
And right now the flowers are starting to bloom, so stop and smell the flowers.

Custom Quilled Wedding Invitation Keepsakes

The spring season has arrived and with it have arrived a few wedding invitations for me to turn into wonderful wedding keepsakes. The very first quilling I did was for my girlfriend -- I quilled many tiny little flowers and place them around her wedding invitation. It did not have glass because I did not know enough at the time to do so. Now the invitations and all my work is under glass.

The first invitation that I sent out this week was one with seashells and starfish. I quilled jamaican blue flowers and placed them on opposite corners of the invitation adding to the shells. I then used a satin silver frame. It is a very pretty invitation and I particularly like the square invitation.

The second invitation is a pretty white invitation with green accents. I was asked to do a chickadee design around the corner of the invitation -- actually we started with a lilacs and hummingbirds design, moved to just hummingbirds, and then to chickadees, since the wedding had chickadees motif for decorations. Anyways, I love the chickadees on the branches and the flow that goes with the invitation. I triple matted the design and again double matted the invitation. The matting was a project in itself. I finished the keepsake with a 12 x 16 black oak wood frame, which really brought out the narrow black mats and the writing on the invitation. Beautiful finished keepsake, really one of my favorites.

As you can see from these two invitations, all of my creations are different. And each invitation is created with all the ideas that you want to incorporate. The first invitation was a client who said "do it your way, I trust your judgement, I have always liked your work," and the second had many ideas and suggestions to add to mine. All of them are fun, and, even after 35 plus years, and 2600 keepsakes later, I still enjoy them. Perhaps the best thing is being part of so many weddings.......

Take Time to Enjoy the Little Things.

Wedding Invitation Keepsakes

This is my own invitation from 1973..................got married, started quilling. Still quilling and still married.........................and a grand daughter now.

As you can see, this is traditional quilling. Most of the Wedding Invitation Keepsakes that I do are with traditional quilling -- that is, the flowers are placed on top of the invitation. The one below is produced with Quilling, My Way. Any of my designs can be combined with the wedding invitation for that perfect keepsake. I particularly love sunflowers, so this one of my favorites.

My wedding invitation keepsakes keep me busy all year round. Every invitation that I receive to quill and frame is different, so that means each keepsake is different. I have done over 2600 of these since 1973, so I guess that I have had a little practice. I photograph each one and they get uploaded to my website.....there are over 200 on my website to look over.

Below is a Wedding Keepsake that I quilled for a friend of my son and daughter-in-law's. The wedding invitation was not included in the keepsake. Included are the wedding photo and the wedding vows from the bride and the groom. This is a great example of a different way to make up the Wedding Keepsake.

The Victorian Wedding Invitation Keepsake below has many little flowers and leaves which can be made in any color. This is a very time consuming piece.

As you can see, I really enjoy making each and every invitation a one-of-a-kind gift. Next time we will take a look at some other invitations that I find particularly beautiful and elegant.

And we will look at Birth Announcement Keepsakes some time in the near future.

Remember, you can check out many more photographs on my website. And if you have an invitation to be quilled, drop me an email. We can choose a design that is just right for you.

WindowBoxes

This is one of my newest designs. I initially called them 'quillages', a cross between quilling and collages. Then a Friend saw them at my last show in Wells, Maine, and said "I love your windowboxes"...... and so the name changes to remind us of past images.

These pieces are all one-of-a-kind with a quilled flower, many rolled paper beads which I made myself, interesting threads, and handmade or fancy papers that I have gathered over the years. Some even include hand-cut pieces and sometimes glass beads. I cut multiple openings in the mat and fill the spaces and add elements until I am Happy. I also add two or three mats to give depth to the piece. I then custom frame under glass, usually in a wood painted frame. Red is my favorite color, so you will see the red WindowBox here.

I enjoy these WindowBoxes because it gives me the freedom to create a new piece every time and they are all wonderful pieces of me. I try to name them based on the feelings they create when they are admired. Let me surprise you with a WindowBox of your very own...........just give me a color and let me do it my way.

I have more of these WindowBoxes on my website in a variety of colors.....and more coming everyday. I am thinking about smaller pieces.

Take Time for the Little Things........
today we just relaxed, and it rained and rained and rained...... I love the rain...

The Very Beginning -- My Story

As promised, the story from the beginning.............On one of those trips to the craft shop in 1973, shortly after Don & I married, I picked up quilling paper and went home to "quill" my girl friend's wedding invitation. I had a pin, glue and paper and made many little flowers to glue around the invitation in a frame. When I was finished, I took the invitation back to the craft shop to show my work. The lady was very gracious, loved the work, and said "you didn't have a quilling tool?" I did not. So when I took the tool home and tried quilling again, it was so simple that I was addicted.

I began making flowers and gluing them to wooden plaques, and then began cutting logs into plaques (well, my husband did, but I sanded them). And so began my life at shows. My first show was in Gilmanton in the school and I sold little soldiers for $1.00. They sold so well that I decided to try more shows, selling wall plaques and making wedding invitation keepsakes.

The shows continued on for many years, and when I began Quilling, My Way, with the cutout over the quilling, I juried with The League of NH Craftsmen, and was rejected. I perfected my craft a little more, well maybe a lot more, and a friend told me to go back to be juried again. So I did.........and I have been doing the Fair ever since.........the first time for me was in 1987. I did not do so well that year, but again, that same friend told me to go for the entire week. So I did............and it was well worth it. And still is well worth the 9 days in a booth.

A little about the 'perfected a little more'........ my loon had all little quilled circles behind the cutout when I was first juried. One of the jury wondered if the little circles could be made to look like little feathers. She saw something that I had not. And since then, I have designed the cutouts to be simple and allow the quilling to be the details. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.

Next time I will tell the story about how the Quilling, My Way, developed. It was simply an accident. But the best things are..................

Quilling, My Way -- Loons

Thanks to Sherry for suggesting I get back to this blog and continue to share. She is a scrapbooker whom I have met through Paperbackswap.

Let's go back to the beginning of Quilling by Sandra White, MY WAY. (Some other time I will go back to my beginning of quilling for me, about twelve years earlier.) My first piece was a Loon where I cut all the little feathers out on the Loon's back. That piece is long gone in someone's collection.

The photo to the right is the end result -- but we all know that the next one will be a little different, as I always try to do it better.

And the photos below are descendants of the original loon -- everybody's favorite, The Loon in Flight, The Loon Calling, The Loon in Display, and The Loon and Baby.

Greetings from New Hampshire.

A weekend of rain......I love rain.......here I sit spending time trading books on swaptree and paperbackswap, and updating ecrater.com, which is a store of mine with vintage craft books, vhs movies, vintage craft and garden magazines and a little of my quilling. By the way, vintage to me means 1970's.

I am also working on adding my work to yankeegoods.com, which is a nice new website of New England crafts and services.

And time to get working on my stock for the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's annual fair which starts the first Saturday in August for 9 days. Maybe you should plan to attend. A great day for all. til next time................
